Wow, crazy story. Sounds like this guy kept his own herd of deer in his backyard in New Brunswick. Condolences to the family: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/
A friend of mine sent me a story of a successful archery whitetail deer hunt in Alberta from last fall. It is a great story because it details the hard work and persistance it takes to harvest a great quality trophy. Check it out:

Just wanted to let you know in case you did not know already… The 2011 British Columbia Limited Entry Hunting draw has been run and the results are posted online here:

Unfortunately this "hunter’s christmas" I did not get any of my draws which were for: Moose, Deer, Sheep, and Elk. I hope you all had better luck than me. At least in British Columbia there is a lot of oppertunities for hunting open seasons. I will probably head up to the alpine and hunt some mule deer in the early season and then maybe try for some elk and moose later as the season progresses.
I just got this email today. Has anyone else seen or heard about this Calico buck taken in Wisconsin? Appearantly he sold the buck to Cabela’s for $13,000. I wonder what it scored.
A buck that a hunter got in Wisconsin. He sent these pictures to a bunch of people to see what he could get and the owner of Cabela’s paid him $13,000 for the head and hide. A calico buck, like this one is rarer than an albino.
Talk about beginners luck, most of us spend years before taking a buck of this caliber if ever. Read on for a story that will either infuriate you or inspire you:

Many hunters have to tramp through the woods for years before downing a trophy-sized buck.
It took 11-year-old Carl Starkey just one hour on the first deer hunt of his life. Carl, who attends Western Reserve Elementary School, hunted with his dad Kermit of Norwalk, and was sitting in a box blind when the deer came out of the woods about 100 yards away. It fed in a field for about 10 minutes, returned to the woods, then came out again following two does.
When it reached 30 yards, young Carl shot it behind the shoulder with a 20 gauge Mossberg Youth Combo. Within 150 yards it was down, a whopping 20-point mosshorn. That might be the deer of a lifetime for this 11 year old beginning hunter.
# Young hunters across Ohio again enjoyed success during the seventh annual Youth Deer-Gun Season Nov. 20 and 21. Hunters age 17 and under harvested 9,024 deer during the special two-day season, compared to 9,331 last year.
Counties reporting the greatest number of deer killed were Tuscarawas (434), Knox (416), and Holmes (337). In north central Ohio, our Richland County’s young hunters bagged 96, Crawford’s 95 Ashland took down 196, and Huron bagged 108.
The Division of Wildlife estimates 40,000 young hunters took to the state’s fields and forests during the two-day season.

We break camp and get some sleep. Wake up at 2:00am and start heading home for thanksgiving dinner. We ended up seeing a couple of cougars at 3:00am crossing the highway. We got home at around 11:00am and brought our game to the butcher and had a great thanksgiving.
With my Elk Hunting trip coming up I thought I would work up my load a bit to see what type of results I can get. I loaded my .300 WM casing with 71 grains of IMR 4831 powder and topped it off with a 168 grain Barnes TSX bullet. I took 3 shots @ 100,200, and 300 yards. My grouping was 1" at 200 yards, and 2" at 300 yards with an overall bullet drop of 6" from 100 to 300 yards. It is an improvement over my last seasons round which included 70 grains of powder.
The Columbian Blacktail deer is definately one of the most difficult animals in North America. Due to their thick habitat and nocturnal tendencies, a decent blacktail buck is hard to come by. Check out this great article about some general blacktail info and a good outfitter that has had some great success:
I got a few items back from my taxidermist recently. I use Ray Wiens in Abbotsford. He is a good taxidermist has very reasonable rates. You can check him out here:
